This column, which we dubbed Establishing Shot, is dedicated to the many rich locations in Atlanta and the south. Each issue, we will focus on a new location that exemplifies the variety that the south has to offer. If you're looking for a unique location for your next shoot, we have it here in the south.

For our first article, we decided to give a brief overview of the city of Atlanta.

Formed in 1837, the city of Atlanta (and Georgia in general) has a rich historical legacy gapping from the civil war to the civil rights movement, making Atlanta a cultural center with a diverse population. Much of antebellum Atlanta was destroyed in 1864 during Sherman's march to the sea, but was soon rebuilt and is now the fastest growing city in the southeast, and quickly becoming a metropolis for tourism, business, and arts & entertainment.

The ever growing city of Atlanta presents a vivid skyline waiting to be captured by the filmmaker's lens. Among the impressive locations Atlanta has to offer are Stone Mountain, Piedmont Park, Centennial Olympic Park and sporting complexes such as Phillips Arena, Turner Field and the Georgia Dome.

Streams of restaurants, stores, houses, apartment complexes and hangouts highlight the distinctive areas of the city. The trendy arts-friendly Little Five Points, the busy urban center of Five Points, the evolving East Atlanta, the elegant Buckhead and the booming commercial complex of central Midtown are some of the beneficial districts found in Atlanta.

Many useful areas outside of the perimeter include the antebellum Marietta square and the beautiful film-friendly city of Rome. Other favorable geographical factors include the mountains in North Georgia and the beaches of Savannah and the Golden Isles in the southeast.

Atlanta, when companioned with the whole of Georgia, has enough resources to fulfill a production companies needs. Contact the Georgia Film, Video & Music office at http://www.filmgeorgia.org/ for help finding a location for your next film.
