Monday director and European shorts
April 25th, 2007 by MartinMonday as I was about to enter the IMAGE member Summit I ran into Monday director Heidi Van Lier promoting her film. She asked if I was going to come see her film and I let her know that I already had seen it and enjoyed it. She guessed that I was Martin Kelley as she’d read my review of the film. She thought that I got it, and I agreed that I had as well. I would have liked to attend the screening to see the reaction but there was that pesky IMAGE member Summit to consider.
It’s nice to see that the filmmakers we cover do actually read CinemATL. I assume it’s a good thing I didn’t bump into Henry Jaglom though or I’d have had to sweat it like Kevin when he met the director of Flesh and Blood.
The turnout for the IMAGE member Summit was less than I would have expected and I hope the feedback helps the staff. I see they’re working hard this year and keeping a smile on their faces.
The turnout for the Rapid ‘i’ Movement finalists was very good and the films that worked the first time I saw them, worked well again. In fact, I was able to appreciate them moreso on second viewing. Congratulations to MAVIN for winning with their entry The Midgard Serpent, very cool indeed and the audience nod went to Between a Rock and a Stone.
I was able to see the European shorts on Tuesday night and definitely found them interesting. Perhaps my favorite was The Tube with the Hat (a story about a father and son road trip to repair their television) which also won the International Short Film award at Sundance. It’s a film that seems to really capture life for the characters and not just tell a story. Another impressive short in the program was Tougher Yet (about a couple with secrets they keep from each other).
I had hoped to catch the Q&A for the Somebodies screening but the program let out too late. I spoke with Director Hadjii and Chris Burns from the film and they thought the screenings went well. I’m glad this film finally screened here in ATL as it was certainly a fun viewing when I was able to catch it in Sundance and later CineVegas.
Looking forward to Blood Car tommorrow night.
